Perfume Review: Frederic Malle Musc Ravageur

Musc Ravageur was created for Frederic Malle’s Editions de Parfums by Maurice Roucel, the creator of Hermes 24 Faubourg, Serge Lutens Iris Silver Mist, Rochas Tocade, Gucci Envy, Shalini, and a legion of other scents. The Editions de Parfums site promises that there will be “no flowers” in Musc Ravageur, “just a refined and exalted skin scent”. As much as I like certain floral notes in perfume, a scent with “no flowers” will always find a special place in my floral-mostly-hating-heart. As will a warm, deep, sensual, spicy scent with a hint of little something dirty-animalic.

Musc Ravageur starts with a series of tiny fragrant explosions on my skin. First there is a starry firework of bergamot, then cinnamon enters the scene with a bang, “like fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the sky." (Jack Kerouac) Then suddenly there is a short period of warm, enveloping darkness of wonderfully animalic musk. And then the ravageur stage is all over and done with and we step into a cozy, candlelit world of vanilla and amber and sweet spices. I smell cardamom, saffron and (sometimes) ginger at this point, with cardamom being especially prominent on my skin. From that stage on, Musc Ravageur is a like a comfortable loving embrace, like snuggling with your loved one, feeling warm, secure, adored and darn sexy, all at the same time.

This is undoubtedly one of my most favorite and often-worn scents. I find Musc Ravageur wonderfully versatile, it can be worn on dressed up and /or romantic occasions, to seduce and conquer, and it can be worn “just for yourself”, to comfort, soothe and warm, all with equal success.

Musc Ravageur is available at Editions de Parfums, €80 for 50ml or €120 for 100ml, or at Barneys, $155 for 50 ml, $230 for 100 ml.

Christina,
It is one of my Holy Grails too, quickly acquiring the status of the Holiest :-)
I've worn it to bed every night for the last couple of weeks. Just because it is so very cozy and warm.

Hahahahaha! I did the same one today. Of course your review is, um, more professional. Among other things. I have really fallen for this one. It's naughty. I am fascinated by your comfort scent take; I find it more animalic and sensual. This and Bal are my dirty non-Guerlains.

You did MR today too? Will read asap. It's MR's lucky day :-)

See, I must have strange idea of comfort, because Bal a Versailles is also extremely comforting for me :-)

Anna,
I am wanting to re-try Angeliques, I know I've tried it before, but I don't remember it. I am very much into angelica note right now. :-)

L,
Hi! *waves*
I can only imagine how wonderful MR would be on a man. My DH is not very much into trying scents on. Boo...

Patty,
Aww, I am sorry it doesn't work on you. Which one is your favorite Malle scent? Did Noir Epices work?

R,
(((Evil Scent Twin)))
What is your favorite Malle scent? Eau d'Hiver? En Passant? I am guessing those two, simply because I like them the least :-)

V,
I think the most prominent note on me is cardamom. Do you get much or any of that here? I am really enjoying that note in MR.
And gosh, I would have loved to smell real musk tincture!

Lotion and oil are on my most urgent wishlist, thank you, V!

Well, I love Lipstick Rose too. Iris Poudre is lovely. The other two are no-no for me :-(

MR is one of my HGs too! And now that I have a bottle of the oil, I'm sure I'll be boring the frag world with my raptures over it :~D

It's funny, b/c as out-and-out sexy as it is, I especially love wearing it at home by myself. It's like lazing in bed all day - comfy and cozy, but a little dirty (b/c of the whole not-leaving-the-bed thing).

Excellent review, as always! And yes, I'm wearing it today too! LOL!

Trina,
Absolutely the same thing here. I find it a sexy, sensual, etc., etc., scent, but it works perfectly as a comfort fragrance "just for myself". And it's very easy to wear too. Total HG :-)

PS how does the oil compare to the EDP? just as good? :-)

Just want to add (somewhat late)how much I love this--it's definitely one of my HGs, though I think it may be a bit less cozy on me than some; I was wearing it the other day, and was struck (again) by how much it smelled like sex! And DH simply refers to it a "the sexy one." But I do enjoy wearing it just for myself, too.
Going back a day, on Shalini: I too find it beautiful, but beyond ridiculous in price. For some reason I have been trying scents in this category lately (Doblis is another). I guess I must want to drive myself crazy:)

Judith,
"The sexy one"- I like that! :-)

And, yes, why must we torture ourselves so? Shalini, Doblis...why can't we stay away from thess kind of unattainable and/or astronomically priced scents? *sigh*

Of course! En Passant, Hiver, but also Vetiver, Carnal Flowers, and Therese.

You chose great images, added lyrical poetry, and a very true to smell description of this one. My favorite part of MR is the spice. It's a monolithic musk to me. Frankenmusk.

Cait,
Frankenmusk. That is a good one!!

i'm a guy and i love wearing this scent. i thought i was casually scamming a squirt when i was at Barneys and I headed for the elevator to leave, then i smelled it on me and had to turn around and go back to ask the price, etc. I hadn't planned to spend $ on perfume that day, so I tried to leave again, but I couldn't. I was impaled on this sensation. So, I went back to the counter and the guy there had already bagged it up for me, knowing I was hooked and would come back. I was going to an event, and I happily realized that this smell would make up for the new shirt I didn't buy and the haircut I didn't get. It felt HANDSOME, and so did I. So...I got in the car and was driving, and for a moment, I fretted that I smelled like a granny. Only one person has commented that it smelled like a womans perfume, but several have said it's sexy. It is very powdery (for a guy with a hairy chest and beard). But...I wear it every day, I love it every day, it represents my minds idea of beauty everyday, and I can't imagine life without it. It's absolutely perfect for me.

I absolutely love this creation. It definitely opens with a bust but settles in nicely. What I like is that it has staying power. On my skin, it doesn't change to much. Its just an incredibly warm sensual creation.

I would have to call this fragrance "dusty." It almost smelled unfinished to me, and yes, I know it's supposed to be a "skin scent but better," but never really needed to have such a thing.

I imagined if you let go of the deoderant for a few days, this would blend with the nice cumin-y smell and give this fragrance something nice to work with. I also have some real dear musk tincture and goat hair tincture concentrate that might give more of a "dirty" theme" for this incomplete, but interesting, fragrance.

Close to the nose, I do get the vanilla, but in a strange metallic form I am not used to, like a stainless steel pump that has been used to pump vanilla syrup buw was washed and feintly retains the scent. The vanilla also almost takes on a carroty nuance in this fashion.
I imagined if you let go of the deoderant for a few days, this would blend with the nice cumin-y smell of armpit and give this fragrance something nice to work with. But as it is, I am very on the fence as to whether I needed to plunk down $230 for this.
