Best of 2008 and a Prize Draw

Only once before have I been more glad to see a year come to an end. In my personal history, year 2008 will go down as the 2nd most horribilis. And that is saying a lot. There were very bright moments that I will remember forever, warmly and gratefully, the moments that I am happy I have got to experience. Still, I am relieved that it is over. Here is to moving on, to getting over, to patching up ...to new beginnings for all of us. To an easier 2009.

This year, we at Perfume-Smellin' Things decided to see the year off by each choosing just one perfume we loved, wore and enjoyed the most in 2008, thus creating our Top 8 of 2008. We invite you to do the same in your comments: name one and only one scent that shone for you the brightest this year.

Alyssa
Etat Libre’s Jasmin et Cigarette is not the best perfume I tried in 2008, nor even the one I reached for most often, but it is the perfect accidental souvenir of a year marked by trips to the city, rough ideas on the verge of turning into something better, inchoate longings for an imaginary lush life, and of course, by perfume and cigarettes. I first tried it in the middle of a New York heat wave, stealing a sample from the tester at Bendel’s after the SAs pointedly ignored me. I’m surviving the winter with my decant. If the center of my dream holds, and I return to the city in the spring, a bottle will be mine.

Beth
In a year of so many lovely smells it is so very hard to choose just one, but choose I have. Hands down, Sali Oguri’s luscious chocolate drenched Persephone was by far the most original and deeply enjoyable perfume that I tried this year. Persephone makes me want to laugh , twirl and dance until I have to gasp for air. I love her decadent , wild gypsy nature but at the same time she is as restorative and earthy as a deep drink from a cool artesian spring nestled within the Middle Earth. She was my prayer for the dying as she helped my mother cross beyond the veil of this world. She entices my husband to nibble on my neck. She is simply....beautiful.

Donna
I have tried many really good fragrances for the first time in the past year, so this is a tough call. After much consideration I am selecting Chypre Noir by Ava Luxe. It is so very different from anything else I have come across. Deeply, profoundly green and dangerously sexy, it’s mysterious and intense, transporting me to a secret enchanted forest with just one powerful drop

Kelley
My pick for 2008 is Tauer's Incense Extrême. I haven't been this excited about a fragrance in quite a while. It is a minimalist scent with (if I remember correctly) only seven ingredients. Andy's website lists spices, powdery orris, dry cedar wood, and ambergris, supported by frankincense as the notes. There isn't much development just pristine frankincense made slightly more exotic by the other listed ingredients. This is literally a religious experience!

Linda
My pick is Andy Tauer's Vetiver Dance. It is the most multifaceted scent I encountered this year: sap-green lily of the valley with a salted twist of grapefruit peel, underscored by vetiver shifting from spicy and rooty to earthy and bittersweet. It's great for walks on the beach.

Marina
To be honest, I thought this mission of choosing one most favorite fragrance of 2008 would be truly impossible. But as I soon as I looked at the "most loved" shelf of my perfume cabinet, I had an answer. Of course, could there be any contest? The perfume that brought me most joy in 2008 was Guerlain's sublime Quand Vient la Pluie. Orrisy melancholy of Apres L'Ondee married to the happy, playful gourmandness of praline, a scent-chameleon that changes its mood according to mine. It is comforting when I need it to be, elegant when I have to be so, demure when requiered, flirty when appropriate. And always exquisitely beautiful. This is one of the most thrilling discoveries of 2008 and one of the gifts for which I will be always grateful. This year, in a super-short, recession version of The Award, it receives a Golden Colombina.

Marla
Jean Paul Gaultier's newest, Ma Dame, is just FUN in a bottle. Dreamsicles. Necco wafers. Now N Laters, hot pink vinyl plastic, Lorna Doone cookies, neon, and some odd touches of metal thrown in. There is absolutely nothing natural in this, but it's a potpourri of modern frivolity. At first I thought, "another synthetic fruity floral", but after receiving two samples from an enthusiastic German SA, I was hooked. I started smelling all the items above, and more. It's just quirky silliness, and, as sweet as it sounds, it's not cloying. It's one of the most humorous perfumes I've smelled in years. This will save me from the blahs of deep dark European winter for certain. And the bottle's fantastic. (How did they make that, anyway??)

Tom
Serge Lutens Serge Noire. I've found myself reaching for it more than anything else in 2008. It smells like being enveloped in the embrace of the best-dressed man at the ball.

And a bonus one from Paul a.k.a Mr Colombina
Fou d'Absinthe was my favourite scent of 2008 because it reminds me of my years Europe, yet somehow feels so right for New York. Its a fragrance I can't wait to get back to after I have obligingly gone through my rotation.

We couldn't end the year without having one last prize draw, our biggest so far. We have three bottles to give away: Chanel Chance, Ralph Lauren Notorious and Vera Wang Look. Please choose ONE that you would like to win and let us know in your comment. The draw will end on 12am EST on Jan. 4th, 2009. Three winners (one for each scent) will be chosen randomly and announced in Jan. 6th. Happy New Year, everybody!

This is a fun way to approach looking back...but so hard for a year that was my first!! Maybe I'll see if anybody else asks the same question, so I can offer a different response each time...

I'm a bit stuck between L'Ombre Fauve, which had me huffing my wrist with direct pleasure almost every time I wore it; Feminite du Bois, which brings me to my wrist nearly as often, but with more exploration & thought (though also joyous and sensual); or Cradle of Light, which took me for such a ride the first time I wore it.

I'll cheat, and pick later. (Backs out of the room, saying "Oh, please enter me in the draw for Chanel Chance...")

I would like to be in the draw for the Vera Wang Look

I think the best releases this year are Amouage Lyric woman and Chanel No 5 eau Premier...but I've not smelled everything released...My personal favorite discovery for the year that brought me endless joy everytime I wore it is Sonoma Scent Studio Rose Musc - the labdanum is gorgeous & the formula so simple and perfect.

is this our favorite perfumes of 2008, and not our favorite 2008 releases?
My everyday perfume switched from Opium to Bvlgari Black in 2008.
I only bought two bottles this year- Bvlgari Black and Moroccan Mint Tea
I went through my sample of Ambre Russe and had to buy a second one

I didn't try many 2008 releases... I liked Ma Dame.

hmmm......my first perfume year, and first year in 30 with a sense of smell. to begin, i can't tell all of you bloggers how helpful your writing has been to me. i love smells and a very few perfumes - most perfumes really turn me off. how to pick through the haystack to find the needles? (great, THAT makes sense! well, you know what i mean......) all the reviews and notes and background are so helpful in narrowing down what to focus on so i can find the gems! i don't know if i'd have the heart to wade through everything out there without you intrepid souls who guide the way.

my fave this year is probably cashmere mist - mr. rose makes soaps, and my favorite is scented with jasmine and sandalwood and is very like cashmere mist. so nice to have that luxurious scent around after you use the soap!

i think i'd like to take my chances with a bottle of notorious, thank you ; )

Happy New Year Everybody! lunarose

2008 was a year of olfactory discovery for me. My great discovery was Bois des Iles, which almost brings tears to my eyes. 'gingerbread' is an inadequate description of the drydown - what happens on the skin after about twenty minutes is stunning - it's the most beautiful thing I've ever smelled. Deeply comforting, but exciting and ravashingly beautiful at the same time. Sigh.

No need to enter me in the draw Marina...I hope 2009 brings you compensatory blessings.

My biggest surprise would probably be Guerlain's Insolence. I smelt it on the strip and thought "meh" - sniffed a few others and then sniffed it again once the topnotes had burnt off a little...it was sublime! Can't stop wearing it.

In terms of new releases, probably Escale a Portofino by Dior - total love.

I'd like to be entered into the Notorious draw, please :)

Well, I think two that got extra wear this year were Ormonde Woman (I rediscovered this thanks to you, and just got a compliment on it last night) and AT L'Air du Desert. I guess the new one I returned to most often was Vetiver Dance. Maybe. Anyway, I do like it a lot, and for reasons I'm not clear on, AT's incenses didn't work as well on me as I'd hoped. Hope you have a great 2009!!!

Bulgari's "Jasmin noir"
I don't even know, if it's new - from year to year I have more difficulties to go with the latest fragrances (not to mention to like them...). I'm not a jasmin babe (I rarely even touch white flowers...) but this one is fortunately barely jasmin on my skin - and not really noir. It's rather bright and smiling, I can smell a bit of wood and amber. And there is almond there - I think that's the reason I fell for "Jasmin noir"...

I would call this year the beginning of my perfumista career. Ha ha. I've always loved perfume, but definitely kicked it up a notch in 2008. As a result, I was busy trying existing fragrances that I'd never tried - didn't get much opportunity to sample new releases. My favorite find - Parfums de Nicolai. The PdN I'm loving the most - Sacrebleu. Of the new releases I've tried (which I can probably count on one hand), I'm one of the few who likes Lancome's Magnifique! Alas, I live so far away from decent perfume shops that I have to depend on samples that I order...and this year, I didn't really place any focus on new releases. Guess I'll need to catch up in 2009!!! At least I can whittle down the choices after reading so many reviews!!! All the best to you in 2009, Marina! And please add me to the draw - for a bottle of Chance. Thanks!

My 2008 favorite was Serge Noire. I will amend Tom's assessment slightly: it's the best-dressed man at the ball ... at home by the fire, after the dancing, with his tie undone, slightly sweaty and sweetly snuggly. Ahhhh.

Because I'm new to perfumes and only started properly discovering them in February, I can't say what has been released that I have enjoyed. I only know what personal discoveries I have made and love. Guerlain's Apres l'Ondee, l'Artisan's Passage d'Enfer, SL's Daim Blond and Louve, Armani Prive's Bois d'Encens, Sinfonia di Note's Saveur d'Artichaut and Chanel Beige are just some that I always reach for.

Best wishes for a happy new year 2009!

Please, enter me in the draw :)

Sballo, by Bruno Acampora, is my perfume of the year; it's green of hay and moss, with pollen and musk and dries down to I can't decide if it's a violet, mushrooms or both. It's a perfectly civilized being going wild, it's Frannie Halcyon AND Bluegrass at Pinus, don't wear this to bed because it won't let you sleep....

It's hard to pick just one for this year - not that it was a great year, but I did pick up a few fun scents. I'll agree that Ma Dame makes me smile every time that I put it on, but so does Pucci's Vivara - I like the Ma Dame bottle better though, so I'll go with that one.

I wish I could pick Prada's Infusion d'Iris, but though I love it, I can't wear it. It stuffs my sinuses up in 3 minutes flat and makes me miserable after that.

Here's to a better 09 and perhaps a willingness on my part to splurge for the Quand Vient La Pluie - but I'm not going to count on it happening.

I'd love to be entered for the RL Notorious.

Best wishes for a 2009 filled with much happiness.

And thank you for this blog--reading it has been a real highlight of 2008!

I couldn't chose just one scent I loved so here are my top 2: The Different Company Sublime Balkiss and ATauer's Le Maroc pour Elle.

Please enter me in the draw for Notorious.
Thanks--Jen

It's great to read the favorites of so many delightful bloggers. Marina: I loved QV la pluie but couldn't bring myself to splurge. Tom: you loved Serge Noire more than Musc 25? Now that I think about it, these two are the perfumes I most wish someone would buy for me, so I wouldn't have to feel bad for not buying food for my dog for the better part of a year.

To clarify, my dog is well fed. In fact, I can see his belly sticking out from across the room. Just saying, if someone bought me Quand Vient La Pluie and Musc 25, I wouldn't have to feel guilty or reckless or totally out of my gourd.

Cait,
I understand. I was very lucky to receive it as a gift, otherwise I doubt I could do it myself :-)
I hope it somehow makes its way into your life too :-))

Fav of the year for me would be Annick Goutal's Neroli. It's minus 20degrees Celcius today with the wind chill. Being entered in a draw for a bottle of Chance would surely warm me up.
Thanks and Happy New Year!

Chanel Beige would probably be my perfume of the year, though I'm not sure I'd call it my favorite. It was definitely a go-to for any occasion - especially the more challenging ones when a good calming confidence scent is required. I suspect it will become a classic - at least in my wardrobe.

Please enter me in the draw for Notorious, and Happy New Year to all!

Wow, I've been sort of put off by the Ma Dame marketing (I think it's been a bit overkill and I'm also not a huge Agyness fan-sorry!) but your description of it sounds amazing - I'll definitely have to try it out. I'd love to be entered for the Look perfume. Thank you! I loved this post- those were great picks! :)

A new perfume I liked that I tried this year was Hard Candy. It wasn't my usual scent, but I liked the way it smelled and got lots of compliments on it. I would like to be entered for the Look Perfume, it sounds like something I'd love to try. Thanks and have a great New Year!

I have enjoyed this blog so much! n

My favorite for 2008 is Fracas. It took a year for me to understand it and like it. It's not too sweet, it smells like roses but not in a cloying way, and it's not afraid to be womanly. I also used up my decants of Ambre Russe and Bulgari Black.

Please enter me in the contest for Chance. Figure I have a chance to win since Jan 4 is my birthday.
